Coat of arms of the district

The Coat of Arms of Cahul District was approved at the meeting of the National Heraldic Commission of the Republic of Moldova on March 19, 2004 (Minutes no.44-III) and by Decision no.04/23-I of the Cahul District Council on June 10, 2004.

The Coat of Arms of Cahul District features a crenellated shield; at the top, on red, a silver boat; at the bottom, on gold, a bunch of grapes with two green leaves; the shield is stamped with a district crown.

The crenellated shield symbolizes the Trajan's Rampart, which appeared on the coats of arms of Cahul County in 1860, 1928, and 2000, as well as on the flag of Cahul County in 2001.

The silver boat in the upper section of the shield symbolizes the waters of the district – as silver is the heraldic color of water – the floodplain of the Prut River, the Salcia Mare and Salcia Mica rivers, the Manta and Beleu lakes, the natural reserve “Prutul de Jos” in Slobozia Mare, and also fishing – one of the main economic activities of the local people. This color is a link with the previous district coats of arms and is typical of Moldovan heraldry in general, representing the military glory of this land and the sacrifices made on the altar of the Fatherland over the centuries.

The bunch of grapes in the lower section of the shield represents viticulture, the main economic branch of Cahul District, which contributes significantly to the annual global production income, the Cahul vineyards, and the winemaking factories in the villages of Borceag, Brînza, Burlacu, Găvănoasa, Slobozia Mare, and others. The green color of the grapes symbolizes nature and vegetation, freedom, beauty, happiness, health, and hope. The gold field expresses wealth, prestige, virtue, grandeur, and wisdom.

The district crown on the shield represents the heraldic position of Cahul District within the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Moldova.
